The following 38 countries are members of the European Patent Convention and are designated in a European patent application:
Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and United Kingdom
Additionally, a European patent may be given effect in a number of countries that are not members of the European Patent Convention. If designated as an extension state a European patent can be treated as if it were a national patent. These countries are:
Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro
No new states are expected to join the EPC in the near future.
