EUROPEAN PATENT CONVENTION COUNTRIES

The following 37 countries are members of the European Patent Convention and can be designated in a European patent application:

Albania, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, The Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and United Kingdom

Additionally, a European patent may be given effect in a number of countries that are not members of the European Patent Convention.  If designated as an extension state a European patent can be treated as if it were a national patent.  These countries are:

Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, Serbia

NEW EPC COUNTRIES

Serbia will be joining the EPC on 1 October 2010 and can be designated in European patent applications or in PCT applications designating EP from that date. Until 1 October 2010 Serbia can only be designated as an EPC extension state.
