EUROPEAN PATENT CONVENTION COUNTRIES The following countries are members of the European Patent Convention and can be designated in a European patent application: Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Turkey and United Kingdom Additionally, a European patent may be given effect in a number of countries that are not members of the European Patent Convention. If designated as an extension state a European patent can be treated as if it were a national patent. These countries are: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro, and The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia
